Kanana Primary School - Grade "R" Extension - Ivory Park, Johannesburg, Southafrica













 

This Grade "R" school is an experiment for a new sustainability through an international cooperation. The design and build project is realized by European volunteer students fro the universities of Venice, Florence, Trieste, Vienna and Salzburg. The seven classrooms and the service block are a necessary extension to the existing school situated in one of the poorest townships of Johannesburg - Ivory Park - and is part of the idea the S.L.U.M._net for capacity building and skills transfer. 
Cooperation: Education Africa, Shanduka Foundation and the help of Lafarge, Doka.


Social/Sustainable Living in Urban Metroplolies - S.L.U.M._net













 

The platform S.L.U.M._net is focussed on the analysis of all those phenomenons necessary or involved when talking about sustainable architecture and its realisation. This involves research, projects, cooperation on national and international level.

S.L.U.M._net is looking for innovative solutions for sustainable (social, ecological and cultural) living models for the often underprivileged communities in the real world. S.L.U.M._net is a non-profit open source organisation realising architectural projects, that are community based, enabling capacity building within the community, enhancing new entrepreneurial models, using skills transfer between the parties involved, raising the HIV/Aids awareness, encouraging equality between female and male participants.


EUNIC architecture workshop '08 - Drill Hall, Johannesburg













 

This international workshop with students from Wits and UJ university in Johannesburg envisaged the goal of developing experimental solutions for (social) housing for South Africa today. Under the guidance of the French Cultural Institute in Johannesburg international and national architects, designers, artists and urban planers presented their work. 
The project was realized through the cooperation of the European Cultural Institutes - EUNIC.


Lesedi Nhahle Training Crèche - Haenertsburg, Southafrica













 

The training crèche is an experiment for a new sustainability through an international cooperation. The design and build project is realized by European volunteer students fro the universities of Venice, Florence, Trieste, Vienna and Salzburg. The seven classrooms and the service block are a necessary extension to the existing school situated in one of the poorest townships of Johannesburg - Ivory Park - and is part of the idea the S.L.U.M._net for capacity building and skills transfer.

Slum-upgrading - Mathare, Kenia













 

Mathare is one of the biggest slums in the world. How can one intervene in such informal situations, how can one generate real sustainable melioration. This was the brief for the student research project: sustainability, appropriate design, capacity building and the possibility to reach sustainable density is only achievable with very subtle design strategies.

Magagula Primary School Skills Centre - Magagula, Johannesburg, Southafrica













 

Planning and realisation of this Skills Centre for the local community of Magagula. The building complex with some 350 m2 covered area was realised as a design and build workshop in only seven weeks by volunteer students from Europe and local volunteers. This project is part of the S.L.U.M._net initiative and was only realisable with the generous help of donations from friends and enterprises at national and international level. 
Cooperation: SARCH, Education Afrika, Montic Dairy, Doka, Michelle Riedmatten and the BGH-students.


AEKI-house - Living Timber - "Box-house"













 

The concept for a modular 'family' of houses for individual requirements was at the basis for this design with a clear and simple architectonic language. Colour variations and façades enable the required flexibility combined with innovative technology and ecological building materials for low energy consumption houses, as a real answer to the sustainability discourse.
The floating-box house can be used as free-standing unit as well as in low-rise high-density situation.

The "L" - house can be used as free-standing unit as well as in low-rise high-density situation.

The concept for a modular 'family' of houses for individual requirements was at the basis for this design with a clear and simple architectonic language. Colour variations and façades enable the required flexibility combined with innovative technology and ecological building materials for low energy consumption houses, as a real answer to the sustainability discourse.
The roof house is a perfect answer to the requirement for a free-standing unit and uses the roof space in an alternative way.

The module house can be used as free-standing unit as well as in low-rise high-density situation. The combination and aggregation as a social and sustainable housing unit makes the module a perfect tool for a great variety of combinations.

The idea for a project of a temporary and floating mosque was born last summer during an international workshop in Venice considering that this city was lacking a similar structure. The intense public discourse going on to this very topic meant finding an understanding of the complex constellation between art, culture and architecture. The heritage of Venetian architecture is a heritage of Islamic architecture.

Architecture beyond architecture - Informal architecture and informal settlements are to be found in many cities all over the world. How to deal with such situations and what are the reasons and problems that are the basis for these urban configurations? Are there possibilities with simple architectural solutions to transform and alleviate the conditions? These challenges where elaborated, analysed, discussed, presented and designed and implemented at an urban scale as part of the three week summer workshop by architectural students at the Venice university.
The projects envisaged where situated in Kibera/Kenia, Ibadan/Nigeria, Kathmandu/Nepal, Guatemala City/Guatemala, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil and Madrid/Spain.

A Bridge for a Border - Pontebba, Italy













 

Design for the historical bridge on the former boarder between Austria and Italy, as a frame for a archaeological site, as an exhibition space for historical material from the Österreichisches Kriegsarchiv, Vienna and the Military Archive in Florence. The bridge is part of a study for a bigger system of historical-military sites of the First Worl War. Collaboration: Claudio Beltrame, Francesco Collotti, Giacomo Pirazzoli.

Feasibility Study for 'Altenheim Perg', Austria













 

Feasibility study for the transformation of an existing residence for aged people. The project envisaged an increase in beds as well as the entire reorganisation of each floor and the facilities according to the new requirements due to demographic changes. The entire building was also thermally re qualified with a timber façade and a system of sliding windows and sun shade generating a new climatic cover. Timber as structural element has more potential than one thinks - High-rise buildings with 20 floors have been examined. The challenge has only begun.

The redesign and urban transformation of the factory and office buildings of WiesnerHager is part of a bigger strategy for the entire company and its presence at the Upper-Austrian headquarters in Austria. The design for the main access building and the new distribution system are part of this strategy.

Competition for "Nam June Paik Museum" - Seoul, South Korea













 

Competition entry for the new NJP-Museum was based on the idea of a building consisting of three elements with a 'skin' that evokes the tectonic structure of the site. The series of exhibition spaces develop along various lines and change from open to enclosed, from light to dark to enhance and underline the intentions of Nam June Paik's video-art and other installations.

House "H" - Amstetten, Austria













 

Transformation of a little house from the early 60es by changing the access system, using the former pitched roof as a terrace and a night unit in timber. The garage realised in concrete holds another timber box with the day functions cooking and eating for the entire family.

House "0" - Pöllau, Rabenwald, Austria














Timber house and studio in the Styrian Alps. The two parts of the complex, the residential building and the studio house, situated on different levels orienting each ideally towards the sun. The buildings are realised in low energy consumption standards.

The first 100% non territorial office in Austria. The 500 m2 office space in a classicist building in the historical centre of Vienna. The concept of non-territorial working meant a perfect zoning according to the functions: individual work, team work, formal and informal meeting, wellness and the big bar as communication centre for the entire office.
